What Are Endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialty in dentistry that provides treatment to the pulp of the tooth and the tissue surrounding a tooth root. If you have severe tooth pain — you could need endodontics.

When you see your dentist for endodontic care, they will clean out the infection that is the cause of the pain. This will relieve the pain and swelling and keep the infection from spreading. Because the pulp is removed, you will be spared future pain from this tooth and it will save the natural tooth so you can continue to use it.

Endodontics is also called a root canal, and many people are concerned about the pain of this process. Root Canals have a bad reputation… however, the pain is not from the dental procedure, it is from the cause FOR the root canal – an abscess, decay, or cavity. It is the procedure that heals the problem and takes away the pain.

The actual inside of the tooth – the space in the tooth – is called the “root canal” as well. Inside the tooth are very sensitive nerves and tissue. If this part of the tooth is exposed, it can be infected and cause a lot of pain. The infection can get worse quickly and then cause the walls of the tooth to suffer additional damage. If caught quickly, we can save the tooth before it needs to be extracted.

Endodontics — a root canal — is not a fun procedure for the patient, however, we will work with you to make you comfortable and provide you with professional and compassionate care. You will receive pain relievers, and sedation is available. We will work quickly and efficiently to remove the source of your pain and get you on the road to recovery.
